A guide to the best bays and beaches in Gozo

As hosts at Townhouse 17, we’re proud to call the island of Gozo our home sweet home. Growing up as islanders, we’ve had the chance to discover all the hidden gems and nooks of Gozo, including the gorgeous island shores that are perfect for endless summer fun. From sandy shores to rocky coves, there is something for everyone here and in this blog we’ll be sharing out top 5 beaches on the island of Gozo.

Ramla Bay

This is, without a doubt, the most popular beach on the island of Gozo and we can confidently say that it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Malta. Its red sands have been immortalised in countless postcards throughout the years and it is no wonder as Ramla Bay is a fine example of nature’s artistry. Whether you wish to enjoy a picnic, a swim in the bay’s glistening waters, sunbathe, or just to take in the spectacular scenery, Ramla is the beach for you. Ramla Bay was also recently awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Status, an internationally recognised eco-label awarded to beaches that meet a high level of environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility standards.

Insider Tip – If you’re visiting in summer and looking for a relaxing time, visit Ramla Bay on a weekday. It will be much quieter as it tends to get busy during weekends.

Hondoq Bay

With its small sandy beach and pristine, crystal-clear waters, Hondoq Bay is a swimming spot that is particularly loved by locals. It is also a popular destination for those seeking to enjoy a beginner’s dive. The bay is situated directly across the island of Comino, the smallest inhabited island (just 2 residents!) in the Maltese archipelago, and can be accessed via the quaint village of il-Qala. Just like Ramla Bay, Hondoq is also a Blue Flag status holder.

Insider Tip – Engage in one of the water sport activities offered by service operators at this bay.

Xwejni Bay

With its small pebbly beach and rocky stretches merging seamlessly into the bay’s shallow waters, Xwejni Bay is another favourite among locals. The bay provides an ideal setting for those looking for a swim or a dive and its natural features make it a bay that’s perfect for beginners and seasoned pros alike. The bay lies on the right of the centuries-old saltpans that are still worked to this very day. The seafront also boasts two shacks where you can enjoy a nice drink while looking at the beauty that surrounds you. Xwejni Bay can be accessed from the popular Marsalforn Bay or the quiet village of Zebbug.

Insider Tip – Buy a bag of local salt from the Xwejni Saltpans

Dwejra Bay

This bay needs no introduction as it was made world-famous by the scene of the wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen in season one of Game of Thrones. The enchanting Dwejra Bay boasts dramatic coastal formations that create a stunning contrast against the crystal-clear waters that spill over the rocks. If you love a deep-sea swim, then Dwejra is the place for you! Dwejra’s Inland Sea is then a good option for those who feel more comfortable swimming in shallow waters.

Insider Tip – Go for a sunset dip in the blue hole. We’ve featured the magical sunset moments at Dwejra Bay in this blog.

Xatt l-Aħmar

Ix-Xatt l-Aħmar, which literally means ‘The Red Bay’ is great spot both for swimming and diving. It is frequented mainly by locals as it is off the tourist track. This charming spot is known for its clear waters and picturesque coastal surroundings. If you’re an experienced diver you can plunge into the deep blue sea and explore the artificial reefs created to boost the diving niche on the island. There are three vessels scuttled off shore. One of these is MV Xlendi, which was originally a double-ended cargo ferry operated by the Gozo Channel Line between Malta and Gozo. It was intentionally sunk in November 1999 to create an artificial reef.

Insider tip: The diving wrecks are amazing to explore but they’re not adequate for new divers. Always seek guidance from the many diving operators on the island.

We’re ever so proud of this island we call home. Gozo is indeed a destination that boasts some incredibly beautiful bays and beaches and makes for a perfect swimming, diving, and snorkeling destination. Oh! And there are many more swimming spots to the ones we listed in this blog but we’ll talk about them in the future posts.
