Comino, the island located between Malta and Gozo, is fantastic for a day trip. A number of adventurous spirits tend to use Comino as a camping destination, however, for this time, a day trip was all that was carried out.
We started the day by heading down to Mgarr Harbour and caught a short 15 minute ferry over to the renowned Blue Lagoon. Upon entering the Lagoon, one is immediately dazzled by the shimmering turquoise waters, which are amongst the clearest and bluest that one will ever see around the world.
Upon arrival, we set up base on one of the sunbeds available for rent for the day, and we proceeded to jump into the sea and explore the area.
Important tip – make sure that you pack your goggles and snorkel so that you can swim around the lagoon and explore the caves scattered around Blue Lagoon and Comino.
Once we got our fill of the sea, we decided to go on an adventure on land. We strolled along the path until we got to Saint Mary’s Tower. We stopped for a moment to take in the beautiful views of Malta and Gozo, as well as the surrounding waters in Comino. This tower was built by the Knights of St. John in the early 17th Century, to serve as a communication point between Malta and Gozo in case there was an attack on Gozo. Interestingly enough, offending knights were sent to this Tower in order to see out their prison sentences.
After snapping a few shots of the view as well as the tower, we went on a short walk to the Isolation Hospital, which was used in the 19th and 20th Century to treat patients suffering from cholera and the plague. During the First World War, this building was used as a hospital and to treat German prisoners.
We then headed back to our sunbeds and had a few more swims before heading back to Gozo via the ferry. It was definitely worthwhile and highly recommended!
