Many have heard about Malta but many look perplexed when they hear the name Gozo. The island of Gozo is part of the Maltese Archipelago of islands and is a mere 5km stretch of sea away from Malta. The Maltese Archipelago is made up of a handful of small uninhabited islands and three inhabited islands, namely Malta (population: approx 500,000), Gozo (population: approx 32,000) and Comino (population: 2).
Being a third of the size of Malta, and having just about 7% of Malta’s population, Gozo is more rural and more tranquil and that makes it distinctly different than its larger sister island. The island is known for picturesque scenery, pristine coastline, untouched country trials, sleepy villages, and a bustling year-round cultural calendar.
Firstly, you need to get yourself to either Valletta or Cirkewwa using public transport or a taxi. These are the two harbours that offer ferry services to Gozo. You can either board the fast ferry from Malta’s Grand Harbour (Valletta) or you board a Gozo Channel ferry to cross the Malta-Gozo channel from Ċirkewwa. Please note that the former is only available for foot passengers while the latter also accomodates vehicles.
