The Maltese Islands are renowned internationally as a world class filming destination, with some of the biggest and best films and series having been filmed, at least in part, throughout the islands. Gozo and Comino have played a big part in helping the islands achieve their fame, with some truly unique and mesmerising locations.
We started the film trail of Gozo in Dwejra, which is where one can find the inland sea and where the glorious Azure Window once stood. The Azure Window collapsed due to natural forces on 8th March 2017 and is now a stunning diving destination.
The Azure Window has appeared in a number of blockbusters, such as in the Count of Monte Cristo and Clash of the Titans, as well as also appearing in an Indian film named Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. The Azure Window played a huge role in Game of Thrones, with the Dothraki having their base there. It is also the location where Khal Drogo, leader of the Dothraki, wed with Daenerys Targaryen, better known as Khaleesi.
After Dwejra, we headed to Gozo’s capital, Victoria, which is where part of Michael Caine’s 1972 film, Pulp, was filmed, as well as the 2018 short docudrama Divine Beauty.
The beauty of Gozo and the Maltese Islands in general is that the same location can be used for different purposes, while ultimately all locations are relatively close to one another, meaning that for film crews, this is ideal, as filming of series and films can be done in a few days.
The neighbouring island of Comino is also a fantastic spot for film buffs, having featured in Troy, which starred Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom, while also playing a part in James D’Arcy’s film Revelation.
