Four Walks to Try in Gozo

As soon as summer’s heat starts dissipating at the end of September, the time is right to start hiking and trekking in Gozo, where the pleasant and mild weather creates the perfect setting for outdoor adventures. Exploring Gozo on foot offers a fantastic opportunity to take in the stunning views of coastal cliffs, the blue Mediterranean, and the sprawling countryside bustling with vibrant wildflowers. Whichever walk you’ll be taking, make sure you’re equipped with a good camera as the views you’ll see are all very insta-worthy.

Here, we present four delightful hiking trails in Gozo that you can explore outside the summer months.

The Xlendi Walk

We’ll start with the longest walk of all four. The Xlendi Walk starts at Mġarr Harbour, your gateway to the island. This captivating hiking route takes you past Fort Chambrai and then follows a course along the coastline, passing through the beautiful Mġarr ix-Xini, made world-famous by Angelina Jolie’s and Brad Pitt’s hollywood movie ‘By the Sea’. Along the way, you’ll traverse the edge of one of the island’s most fertile valleys and later enjoy the stunning views from Ta’ Ċenċ and Sanap Cliffs. As you walk along the coast from Sanap, you’ll start seeing the newly restored Xlendi Tower looming, guarding the picturesque Xlendi Bay, where the walk ends.

The Dwejra Walk

Dwejra is always on top of the list of places we recommend to our guests. It is a spectacular natural gem, protected on a local and international level, which can be truly appreciated if you embark on this rather unknown route. The walk takes you through the sleepy, yet charming, hamlet of Santa Luċija and then showcases the island’s countryside at its finest. Along the way you’ll also see limestone quarries, where we source our stones to build traditional houses. Along the way you’ll get glimpses of the Fungus Rock from afar, before you can truly take in its grandeur when arriving at the bay.  Take some time to explore Dwejra’s main attractions, including the recently refurbished tower and the gorgeous Inland Sea, before retracing your steps through the quaint San Lawrenz village.

The Ramla Walk

The walk commences at Marsalforn Valley, which is at its most enchanting in the off-season, when rain gives it a new lease of life after the Summer heat. Wildflowers paint the landscape, birdsong fills the air, and the gentle trickle of rainwater adds serenity. Take the winding path through the valley to reach the village of Xagħra. Xagħra stands out with its rich historical legacy, featuring unique landmarks such as Ta’ Kola Windmill, a rare survivor from the Knights’ Period, and the renowned Gġantija Temples, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. These temples are believed to have been constructed over 5,000 years ago, pre-dating even Egypt’s pyramids. We strongly recommend pausing to explore these extraordinary sites during your walk. To conclude the Ramla Walk, descend to the idyllic Ramla Bay, a perfect place to relax and reflect and, if the weather’s very nice, then a swim is also very possible.

Ta’ Ġurdan Walk

This circular Gozo walk begins and ends in Għarb’s beautiful village square. As you set off along the path beside the church, take in the scenic views of recently restored Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse and the majestic Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary. The route leads you through the picturesque Wied il-Mielaħ valley and up to the summit of Ta’ Ġurdan Hill, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the island’s hilly terrain and the vast sea beyond the steep cliffs.

Continue your journey through the stunning Wied il-Għasri valley, nestled between towering cliffs, and visit Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse, which offers breathtaking island views. Finally, the walk takes you to the much revered Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, a place of religious devotion and ex-voto offerings. To conclude, follow the road through the fields behind the sanctuary, leading back to the village square where your adventure began.
