You might think that summer on the island of Gozo is all about the sea, but this season offers many experiences beyond the island’s sparkling seas and sandy shores.

During the summer, life in Gozo adopts a particularly tranquil pace. The customary Mediterranean afternoon siesta remains an essential practice, providing a necessary respite from the heat. Many people also flock toward beachside locations to enjoy the refreshing sea breeze. Additionally, evening gatherings in the village piazzas are a quintessential part of daily life.

But that’s not all – Summer is also Festa season. Witness a mesmerising blend of fireworks, lively band marches, beautifully decorated village churches, and jubilant celebrations in honor of patron saints. From May onwards, the island comes alive with vibrant feasts, showcasing Gozo’s deep-rooted passion for religious traditions. Christmas in Gozo

Christmastime brings with it many traditional events that take place all around the island. Local processions with Baby Jesus lead to pageants, carols, concerts, and the cherished Midnight Mass, where it is a tradition that a chosen boy or girl recount the Nativity story to the congregation.

Christmas Day is cherished family time, marked by sumptuous meals with traditional delicacies like mince pies, Christmas pudding, turkey or chicken, and delightful “honey rings.”

Easter in Gozo

Holy Week and Easter in Gozo are steeped in tradition. During Holy Week, the solemn days are filled with religious exhibitions, sacred concerts, pageants, church functions, and processions.

In processions, one can observe the profound devotion of participants who wear full-head hoods to conceal their identities while hauling heavy ankle chains in penance or as a votive offering. Statues depicting the Passion of Christ are also carried through the main streets of each village in Gozo. In Victoria, this tradition is particularly alive, with two processions held during Holy Week.

As Easter Sunday dawns, the somber atmosphere that engulfs the island quickly turns joyous as statues of the Risen Christ are paraded through the streets to the jubilant music of accompanying brass bands.
